9 Reusable and Lightweight Gear Supplies for Your Commute

Let’s face it the planet is screwed unless we do something about it. Here are some ways we can all make a difference.

Start with what you can do.

1. Use glass lock

Glasslock is awesome. It’s great for 2 reasons, first it’s not plastic and second, you avoid the carcinogenic emissions from plastic containers when you heat them up in the microwave. Glasslock can be used over again; we recommend warming up in the microwave without the lid. Note: There are many brands to choose from, Glasslock is one of the oldest and more trusted.

2. Use a reusable utensil kit, or bring metal dishware

This is not the most intuitive and is not for the faint of planet lovers. This is a commitment to getting rid of single use plastics. This utensil kit is awesome because it doubles for hikers and the compactness of the whole thing just makes more sense. Plus, it’s lightweight.

3. Bring your lunch salad all on Monday in the bags from the store

This is a cool time saving, and Tupperware saving step. If you have enough room in your company’s refrigerator, you can bring a whole bag of salad and a bottle of dressing in on a Monday and avoid having to use multiple containers during the week. Easy and effective!

4. Get a reusable brown bag

This a nice piece of lunch-tech. Any reusable bag will do, but this one is at the right price and this brand is the most established in freezer lunch bags. The PackIt is also recommended by fellow engineers, who publish in Popular Science.

6. Get a reusable water bottle

We all have a friend who still uses plastic water bottles. (forehead smack) Calm on dude! Maybe it’s you, and that's okay. We want to get you on team Nalgene. And if not for the planet, a Nalgene will help you keep better track of how much water you’re drinking! Also, they are BPA free.

7. No more Ziploc, get (re)Zip bags

The revolution is in full force! – if I may indulge myself. I am really excited about these (re)Zip bags. BlueAvocado brand makes a really good product. And just for a counterpoint, another option is standing bags by Stasher, which has a small, yet useful modification for storing these bags upright in your fridge.

8. Get a reusable thermos

I’ve experimented with a lot of different types of thermos. I’ve always been on the hunt for one I could throw in my bag and not worry about it spilling. One day I found the Klean Kanteen® and that was it. This is the best and only thermos I will ever buy. They even sell replacement parts as needed.

9. Bike to Work

Fairly obvious, yet not a lot of people do it. It’s a little bit of a learning curve. That first horn beep at you while you’re in the road lane definitely makes you reconsider the whole thing for a second, but hey the road is yours too. Give it a shot if you can!
